Smeeth Sandpit was purchased by a collective of local villagers as there was real concern that as a brownfield site it could be used and developed in way that would have been detrimental to the area and the environment.

The Facts

 

 

Why & how was the company created?

 

In July 2013 after several meetings of villagers it was agreed to contribute funds to purchase Smeeth Sandpit to rescue it from the threat of unwanted development and a company was quickly set up to provide a legal body to buy the land.

Approximately 110 families signed a witnessed deed agreeing to pay varying amounts "towards the cost of buying and securing for the benefit and conservation for the local community the former sandpit"

To recognise contributions, it was agreed that "For each pound contributed, subscribers will receive one share in Smeeth Sandpit Preservation Limited. The shares will be issued to the person whose name and details are included on the subscription letter."

The company has a diverse shareholding with no large shareholders and the average shareholding is less than £2,500.

Once the purchase was completed subsequent shareholder meetings led to requests for volunteers to take up Director & officer roles. It was also agreed that Smeeth sandpit would be a 'natural space' which we would endeavour
